The Children's Schola at Most Holy Redeemer plays a vital role in the parish's liturgical life. Singing at the 11am Mass, special services like Lessons & Carols, and their special Spring Concert, the Schola brings beauty, earnestness, and joy to our worship experience. The Schola's repertoire includes traditional sacred music, beautiful children's settings of carols and hymns, age-appropriate modern compositions, and even an occasional taste of chant, fostering a true appreciation for the church's musical heritage among its youngest members.
Singing in the Children's Schola engages young parishioners – along with their families – actively in worship, and children take pride in helping with this important part of Mass. Children also have the opportunity to lead and encourage others when we sing as a congregation, helping the whole community "pray twice."
Our music education philosophy focuses on building excellent musical fundamentals, rewarding curiosity and caring, and understanding the important liturgical significance of the songs we sing. We hope to nurture a lifelong love of sacred music and participation and ensure that our community's traditions continue to thrive for future generations.
The Children's Schola program works closely with the Religious Education program and with the Cornelia Connelly Center next door, holding weekly after-school choir practice for CCC students in preparation for their monthly school Mass. It is especially meaningful for last year's class to sing for their younger friends' and siblings' First Communion.
Visitors to Most Holy Redeemer often say that hearing a choir of children's voices at Mass feels special and deeply moving. During rehearsal, we talk about our role as helpers in our community's worship, and consider the feelings – comfort, hope, closeness to God, welcoming, thankfulness – we can share through music.
We also have those feelings in mind at the East Village "Spiritual Sounds" concert, founded by faith leaders including a Most Holy Redeemer pastor and attended by hundreds of our neighbors each year. This year, the Schola represented our Catholic faith with a sweet children's setting of William Blake's poem "The Lamb." The children were excellent ambassadors for our parish, behaving with genuine respect, curiosity, and kindness.
